Job location: Herent, Belgium and Swalmen, The Netherlands

Reporting to the Malt Operations Manager Europe, the Plant Manager is responsible for providing operational leadership for the malt plants in Swalmen & Herent for environment, health and safety leadership and compliance, food safety, plant costs budget preparation and execution, operational efficiencies, capital expenditure planning and execution, product quality, employee hiring, development and engagement, customers satisfaction and being engaged with the local community.

Major Tasks:

Prepare and operate the facility within the approved plant costs budget and capital expenditure:

  • Responsible for management and compliance of capital and operating budgets with high degree of complexity to achieve medium-short term financial performance objectives set by the BU/Operations Function.

  • Ensures and holds direct reports accountable for meeting and controlling operating expenses and established targets.

  • Leads and supports implementation of operational efficiency programs which may include, but are not limited to, standardization of plant information manufacturing systems, quality control, process safety management, reliability excellence, & operators best practices.

Follow through on the BU objectives and key initiatives:

  • Drive continued refinement of all Manufacturing Excellence work stream processes.

  • Facilitate cycles of refinement in all Manufacturing Excellence work streams.

  • Champion Manufacturing Excellence principles and maintain high standards for the utilization and improvement of Manufacturing Excellence tools.

Support and prioritization of plant production and operating facilities comply with Cargill’s EHS, food, and feed safety standards:

  • Develops strong partnership with EHS/FSQR expert leaders to ensure the most effective risk mitigation plans and regulatory compliance strategies are in place;

  • Health & Safety: champions a culture of zero injury and illness. Environmental: Reduces and proactively avoids environmental impact and potential risk to the businesses.

  • Food Safety: Accountable for eliminating risks associated with products. Ensures HACCP requirements are met in all food processes.

  • Ensures overall oversight to EHS/FSQR incident data to identify risks and to recommend mitigation strategies (i.e. safety index, RIFR, food safety index, FSQR audits).

Produce and ship finished products to our customers according to agreed specifications:

  • Provide leadership on strategic planning and collaborates with Logistics/Procurement/Sales/Supply Chain organizations to ensure availability of raw materials and ability to meet customer specifications and timelines.

  • Accountable for overseeing execution and delivery of production commitments based on agreed monthly and annual sales plans. Ensures overall customer satisfaction and that any inquiries, incidents and/or issues are resolved in a timely manner.

  • Monitors overall manufacturing operational results (i.e. yields, consumables, efficiencies and cost figures) and takes appropriate action to stay on track with budgets and other agreed targets.

Maintain employees’ relationship and engagement:

  • Provides leadership and oversees general workforce administration policies and programs in the areas of communications, staffing, training, evaluations, disciplinary actions and safety.

  • Provides leadership and leads the implementation of systems and processes to maintain a highly engaged workforce. Holds direct reports accountable for actively addressing engagement issues and identifies/leverages best practices in engagement.

  • Supports and oversees evaluations and establishes development goals aligned business and operational strategy. Identifies and develops key talent to support future business needs.

Perform miscellaneous job related duties as assigned

Integrated in the weekend service to do the production tour (every 5 to 6 weeks)


Required Qualifications

  • Engineering degree, preferably in Bio-Chemical/Agronomic Science or equivalent by experience

  • Dutch and English language, spoken and written (French verbal skills preferred)

  • Minimum 5 years in either a malting/brewing environment or grain service business environment or food manufacturing industry

  • Demonstrated and balanced understanding of both the internal (plants/operations) and external (customers, margin environment, yield valuation) business environment and ability to determine what is best for Cargill (employee safety, engagement, profitability, customer service)

  • Demonstrated experience and proven track record in continuous improvement and project management

  • Leadership, collaboration, and influencing skills
